Southwest Kansas CattleWomen announce scholarship winnerKansas During the recent Beef Empire Days Awards Banquet on June 2, Kathryn Miller, Manhattan, was announced as the 2007 Southwest Kansas CattleWomen's $1,000 scholarship recipient. Miller is the daughter of Dan and Kathy Miller of Cimarron. Kathryn finished her first year at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine and plans to pursue a career in agricultural food animal veterinary medicine. Her summer curriculum will include a Certificate in Feedlot Production Management. Miller's work experience while at KSU includes extensive research in the effects of free-choice protein block supplements on ruminal microbe populations, and individual animal identification, specifically radio frequency, which was published in BEEF Magazine. Prior to her acceptance into the veterinary program, she worked in a cancer laboratory at KSU, conducting an individual cancer research project that primarily looked at the effects of angiotensin II on transforming growth factor production, for which she received the KSU Undergraduate Basic Cancer Research Grant. As an undergraduate, Kathryn was a member of many collegiate clubs including Collegiate CattleWomen, Block & Bride Club, KSU Honors, Alpha Zeta, and the National Collegiate Honor Society. She is a member of the American Association of Bovine Practioners and the Theriogenology club within the vet school. During her time in Manhattan, Kathryn has volunteered for an animal shelter and an emergency animal shelter. Winners of this scholarship are required to perform at least one public presentation to promote beef during their upcoming fall semester. The Southwest Kansas CattleWomen see Kathryn as a great representative for the beef industry not only now, but in the years to come. Recipients of this scholarship must also be a resident of the 19 southwestern Kansas counties. The Southwest Kansas CattleWomen organization has approximately 100 members interested in the promotion of the beef industry and work throughout the year to raise money for this scholarship. They also work through various programs and in-store promotions to educate elementary students and the general public about the importance of beef in our lives. Date: 6/7/07
