Moisture across state scarce

Colorado

Moisture across Colorado was scarce during the week ending June 3, with most areas reporting amounts well below average for this time of year, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Colorado Field Office, June 4.

Temperatures tended to fluctuate statewide with averages between the mid-50s and high 60s being reported. Topsoil and subsoil conditions were comparable from the previous week. Producers had an average of 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork.

Winter wheat was 89 percent headed last week and 4 percent turning color. The crop is now rated in mostly good condition. Spring barley is in mostly good to excellent condition. Spring wheat was 97 percent at or beyond the emerged stage with the crop rated in mostly good condition.

sorghum was 41 percent planted by week's end while sunflowers were 44 percent planted. Dry onions continue to be rated in mostly good condition. Summer potatoes were 95 percent planted and 62 percent emerged with the crop rated in mostly excellent to good condition. Fall potatoes were 99 percent planted and 16 percent emerged with the crop rated in mostly good condition. corn planting was complete by week's end with 70 percent of the crop at or beyond the emerged stage. The crop continues to be rated in mostly good condition. Sugarbeets were at 85 percent up to stand by the end of the week and rated in mostly good condition. Dry beans were 29 percent planted and 4 percent emerged with the crop rated in mostly good condition.

First cutting alfalfa was 36 percent complete by the end of the week. The crop is rated in mostly good condition.

Pasture and range conditions decreased due to the lack of moisture. They continued to be rated in mostly good to fair condition last week. Death losses for cattle and sheep were rated at average for the week. Livestock condition is rated in mostly good to excellent. Stored feed supplies are rated below average for this time of year.
