Governor's Charity Steer Show celebrates 25th anniversaryIowa The Governor's Charity Steer Show will celebrate its 25th anniversary at the Iowa State Fair. This year the theme of the state fair is "Sounds Like Fun". The show ring competition takes place August 11, at 4 p.m., in the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion at the Iowa State Fair. Immediately following the competition, the steers will be sold at an auction, with proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald Houses of Iowa and the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation. Both the show ring event and the auction are open to the general public. The first Governor's Charity Steer Show was held during the 1983 Iowa State Fair. Since its inception, this event has raised more than $1.3 million. Nearly all of the show proceeds are donated to the Ronald McDonald Houses of Iowa, which provide a "home away from home" for families of seriously ill and hospitalized children. There are three independent Ronald McDonald Houses in Iowa, located in Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City. Beginning in 1995 the proceeds from the sale of one steer are donated to the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation which is working to rebuild the fairgrounds. To celebrate 25 years of success, this year's auction will also include one special piece of the event's history. In conjunction with the auction of the steers, one complete set of Governor's Charity Steer Show hats will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald Houses of Iowa. This annual event is sponsored by the Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen's Association. Governor Chet Culver will be hosting the event. Any individual or business interested in participating in this year's event can contact Brian Waddingham at the Iowa Beef Industry Council, 515-296-2305. Date: 6/6/07
