Annual wheat Day event is June 5 near LamarMissouri University of Missouri Extension's Annual wheat Day begins at 6:30 p.m., June 5 on the farm of David Sheat near Lamar. David Tague, from University of Missouri Variety Testing, will lead area farmers through the field variety trials. More than 60 varieties are tested each year at the University of Missouri field wheat plots. "Although it will be interesting to see which varieties of wheat withstood this year's freeze, it is important to remember to choose proven top yielding types," said Jay Chism, agronomy specialist with University of Missouri Extension in Barton County. "Hopefully, we won't have another late freeze like this year's for quite a while." Laura Sweets, MU Extension pathologist, will be on hand to provide information about using fungicides on wheat. "I have received several calls about using fungicides on wheat," said Chism. "Laura will provide information that may help make determinations about applying fungicides for plant health." Wayne Bailey, MU Extension entomologist, will provide information about this season's insect pests that may have contributed to lower yields. Melvin Brees, Market/Policy Extension Associate with FAPRI, will provide basic marketing tips anyone can use. "Each of the speakers will provide information that producers can take home and use to improve their farming operations," said Chism. "This is a good chance for producers to gain insight into production options that may help avoid problems in future wheat crops." To find the Sheat farm, go east of Lamar (about four miles) to State Hwy. A, then north on Hwy. A to 10th Road (about one mile), and then east about one-half mile to the first house on the north side. Date: 6/7/07
