GATES CLOSED--The flood gates at Ottawa, Kan., were closed over the weekend to protect the downtown business district from flood waters. A bystander sits atop the floodgates to watch the Marais des Cygnes River flood waters. The flood gates closed Highway 59 just north of downtown Ottawa. (Journal photo by Doug Rich.)

HIGH WATER--Flood water virtually closed Osawatomie, Kan. This railroad crossing on Indianapolis Road just south of town shows how high the water had risen by the afternoon of July 2. Nearly 20 inches of rain fell on parts of eastern Kansas over the weekend sending rivers and streams out of their banks. (Journal photo by Doug Rich.)
