Settles earns Junior Bronze and Silver Awards

Nebraska

Jara Settles, Hoskins, Neb., has earned the National Junior Angus Association's Bronze and Silver Awards, according to James Fisher, director of activities and junior activities for the American Angus Association in Saint Joseph, Mo.

Jara, the 18-year-old daughter of Joan and Jerome Settles, is a May 2007 graduate of Norfolk Public Schools. She is involved in the NJAA and the Nebraska Junior Angus Association. She has shown her Angus in numerous shows at the local, state, and national levels. She has participated in the quiz bowl and All-American Certified Angus Beef Cook-off, public speaking, photography, poster, and creative writing at the National Junior Angus Show. She has also served as a mentor for younger exhibitors at the NJAS. She has been a member of the National Junior Angus Association since 1999.

The Bronze and Silver Awards are the first two levels of the National Junior Angus Association Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards and then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in the areas of junior Angus association activities, participation in showmanship and leadership competitions, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle.

The National Junior Angus Association promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and self-development opportunities for nearly 11,000 members nationwide.
