Funding priorities take center stage in summer meeting for soybean checkoff

The farmer-leaders of the United Soybean Board and soybean checkoff will come together July 6 through the 8 in Columbus, Ohio, to discuss significant issues for the present and future and to set funding parameters for 2008. Discussion items on the agenda include the future promotion of soy biodiesel, relationships with the U.S. livestock industry, international and domestic marketing efforts, soybean quality and future opportunities regarding new soy-based products and technology. Interview opportunity available with Eric Niemann, USB chairman and soybean farmer from Nortonville, Kan.

Checkoff establishes rust sentinel plots

With most planting complete, soybean farmers can now focus on keeping their crops healthy and disease-free. The United Soybean Board and NCSRP are working to help soybean farmers stay on their toes in the detection of soybean rust by funding rust sentinel plots across the country to complement those established by USDA. But rust isn't the only thing keeping soybean farmers up at night. Soybean cyst nematode is the single biggest yield-robbing pest in soybeans today and can cause substantial yield loss each year. The soybean checkoff has a large multistate research effort to increase resistance to SCN using a molecular approach. Interview opportunity available with Rick Stern, USB Production chair and a soybean farmer from Cream Ridge, NJ.

Built soy tuff

The next time you have a big load to haul in your truck, look to soy for protection of that paint job. A product is available from Urethane Soy Systems Company to protect your truck bed. This soy-based, spray-on liner, called Bio-Tuff, is abrasion-resistant and can stand up to any adverse weather conditions. To learn more about Bio-Tuff, visit www.soyoyl.com. The United Soybean Board and soybean checkoff support soy-based products such as Bio-Tuff that increase the demand for soy and improve soybean farmers' bottom line. Interview opportunity available with Todd Allen, USB New Uses chair and a soybean farmer from West Memphis, Ark.

Revving up excitement for biodiesel fuel

The United Soybean Board and soybean checkoff have worked hard to support research and initiatives that advance the use of soy biodiesel fuel within the agricultural community. And now they are seeking opportunities to gear their message to a wider audience. This summer the USB will be sponsoring six events in the National tractor Pullers Association 2007 Championship Series. The sponsorship will allow the USB to promote the quality and performance attributes of soy biodiesel to an audience of mainstream diesel users. Interview opportunity available with Chuck Myers, USB Domestic Marketing chair and a soybean farmer from Lyons, Neb.
