GCCC rodeo competitor makes finals at nationalsKansas Cort Scheer, a Garden City Community College saddle bronc rider from Elsmere, Neb., has made it to the final round at the College National Finals Rodeo. Even with a little bad luck on his first performance June 9, he was able to come back on his next two rounds and qualify for the finals. I felt he deserved a re-ride but didn't receive one," said GCCC Head Rodeo Coach Jim Boy Hash. "His horse didn't give him a fair ride." Scheer came back on his second ride and took second place with a score of 81 points. On his first ride in the third go, he tied for third place with 79 points. "With placing as high as he did already, and one more ride tonight in his third round, that's enough to qualify him," Hash said. The final round will begin June 16 in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association year-end event. GCCC qualified two riders for nationals this year. Justin Keith, of Allen, also made it into the finals in team roping. Keith ran into some bad luck and took no times on his first two stints in the arena, eliminating him from the final round. Scheer ended his regular NIRA Central Plains Region season with second place in the standings for saddle bronc riding when GCCC concluded regular rodeo competition in April, easily qualifying for a chance to ride in the CNFR at Casper, Wyo. Nationals began June 9. He also earned fifth in steer wrestling and fourth in men's all around competition in the regional standings. Keith received surprise notification that he was also eligible to ride at nationals. He had finished the season in fifth place in team roping, and in May received an invitation to the finals. The coach speculated that a previously qualified competitor might have been ineligible, opening the spot for Keith. "Cort is sitting real good right now," Hash said. "I'm real proud and excited for him." B 12 7/9/07 1 Star WK Date: 7/5/07
