Winter wheat production up from last month
South Dakota The South Dakota July 1 winter wheat production is forecast at 81.0 million bushels, up 2 percent from the June 1 forecast, according to the South Dakota office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. The yield, at 45 bushels, is up 1 bushel from the June 1 forecast and up 9 bushels from last year. Harvested area, at 1,800,000 acres, is unchanged from the June 1 forecast and up 650,000 acres from last year. Forecasted harvested area ties the record high set in 1986. The July forecast represents record production if harvested area and yield are realized. Other spring wheat production is forecast at 57.2 million bushels, up 34 percent from 2006. The yield, forecast at 43 bushels per acre, is up 13 bushels from last year's yield. Acres intended for harvest, at 1.33 million, are down 6 percent from last year. Oat production, at 13.30 million bushels, is up 146 percent from last year. The yield is forecast at 70 bushels, up 13 bushels from last year's yield. Acres harvested for grain are forecast at 190,000, up 95,000 acres from 2006. Barley production is forecast at 1.65 million bushels, up 195 percent from last year. Yield is forecast at 55 bushels per acre, up 15 bushels from last year. Acres intended for harvest, at 30,000, are up 16,000 acres from last year.
