Kansas wheat Commissioners experience flour milling processBy Doug Rich Members of the Kansas wheat Commission received some hands-on milling experience at the Hal Ross Flour Mill on the campus at Kansas State University July 23 and 24. The wheat milling experience was part of the continuing celebration of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Kansas wheat Commission this year. The Hal Ross Flour Mill is the new teaching facility on the Grain Science and Industry Complex. "We felt because the Kansas wheat Commission has been such a big supporter of the International Grains Program (IGP) it would be a nice way to help them understand what their customers go through and give us a chance to say thank you to them," Kendall McFall, KSU flour miller/instructor, said. The commissioners experienced the milling process from cleaning the grain through packing the flour. The commissioners milled about 120 bushels of Kansas hard red winter wheat into white flour. The flour was then packaged in specially printed cotton 20 and 40 pound bags commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Commission. Aaron Harries, director of Marketing for the Kansas wheat Commission, said some of the flour would be given to dignitaries and officials associated with the Kansas wheat industry and the rest would be for sale to the general public. Proceeds from these sales will be donated to the Greensburg Relief Fund. Commissioners taking part in the milling experience were Jay Armstrong, Mike Brown, Doug Keesling, Tom Morton, and Richard Randall. Kendall McFall and Mark Fowler, Technical Director at IGP, guided them through the wheat milling process. Fowler told the commissioners that this will be a challenging year for wheat millers as they deal with low test weight, low protein wheat. Millers will need to adjust after going from an unusually high protein level in 2006 to an unusually low protein level in this year's Kansas wheat crop.
