Harvest wrapping up

Kansas

Showers were scattered throughout the state during the week ending July 22, with some areas in the north central district receiving higher amounts, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas Field Office, July 23.

Temperatures remained average. Harvesting wheat and hay were the primary activities. Producers averaged 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture was rated 6 percent very short, 33 percent short, 57 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 2 percent very short, 23 percent short, 71 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus.

Ninety-eight percent of the wheat has been harvested. Ninety-one percent of the corn has silked, compared to 90 percent last year and 82 percent for the five-year average. Thirty percent is in the dough stage, compared to 31 percent last year and 22 percent for the five-year average. Three percent has dented. corn condition was rated 3 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 16 percent excellent. Sixty-one percent of the soybeans have bloomed, compared to 76 percent last year and 62 percent for the five-year average. Seventeen percent is setting pods, compared to 22 percent last year and 19 percent for the five-year average. Soybean condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 34 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Eight percent of the sorghum has headed, compared to 17 percent for both last year and the five-year average. sorghum condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 61 percent good, and 11 percent excellent.

Ninety-six percent of the second cutting alfalfa has been harvested, the same as last year but one point behind the five-year average. Twenty-three percent of the third cutting alfalfa has been harvested, compared to 38 percent last year and 35 percent for the five-year average. Twenty-four percent of the sunflowers have bloomed, compared to 12 percent last year and 13 percent for the five-year average. Sunflower condition was rated 4 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 62 percent good, and 14 percent excellent. Eighteen percent of the cotton is setting bolls, compared to 3 percent last year and 10 percent for the five-year average. cotton condition was rated 20 percent fair, 65 percent good, and 15 percent excellent.

Range and pasture conditions were rated 2 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 44 percent good, and 12 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies were rated 5 percent very short, 11 percent short, 83 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies were rated 3 percent very short, 15 percent short, 79 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Stock water supplies were rated 1 percent very short, 8 percent short, 87 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus.
