Harvest picks upMinnesota The oat and barley harvests picked up speed during the week ending July 22, about one week ahead of the average pace, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Minnesota Field Office, July 23. The spring wheat harvest was getting underway as grains were ripening rapidly amid dry weather. Topsoil moisture supplies continued to dwindle, as nearly 75 percent of the state was rated as short or very short. corn silking and soybeans blooming were more than 80 percent complete. Producers were spraying for soybean aphids, more notably in the southeast corner of the state. The average temperature for the week was 69.7 degrees, 0.6 degrees below normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of July 20 were rated 37 percent very short, 35 percent short, 27 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. As of July 22, ninety percent of corn acreage was silking compared to 60 percent for the five-year average. Twelve percent of corn acreage was in the milk stage compared to 3 percent average. soybeans were 82 percent blooming compared to 73 percent average. Seventy-five percent of spring wheat acreage was turning ripe, with 4 percent combined. Oats were 90 percent turning ripe, with 26 percent combined. As of July 20, forty percent of field corn and 48 percent of soybeans were rated in good or excellent condition. Sixty-nine percent of spring wheat was rated in good or excellent condition. Sunflower conditions were rated 71 percent good or excellent. Date: 7/25/07
