Rural Development funding will promote Web-based salesColorado Rocky Mountain Farmers Union announced the award of a grant that can change the face of farming in northeast Colorado. The High Plains Food Coop, an association of livestock producers, farmers and consumers, will use a $40,000 Rural Business Enterprise Grant from RMFU funding partner, the USDA Rural Development, plus $23,000 in matching funds from RMFU's Cooperative Development Center to create a Web-based food co-operative serving northeastern Colorado and the Front Range. HPFC's marketing will be modeled on the Oklahoma Food Cooperative's software, which has been contributed to RMFU for the use of the HPFC. The grant will fund a study of the Oklahoma Coop model to determine how it might be adapted to HPFC's needs. It will also fund customizing of the software, recruiting food producers, and a media campaign to attract consumer interest in the surrounding area and along the Front Range. "Like the Oklahoma Food Coop, the HPFC will allow members to buy and sell online, and there will be a delivery schedule serving the consumer," said Bob Mailander, director of the RMFU Cooperative Development Center. "Producers will be from the three-state area surrounding Logan, Phillips, and Yuma counties. This kind of project supports the rural economy and connects our heritage with the high-tech future."
