Pre-plant wheat school

Kansas

This year showed the importance of production and management decisions in growing wheat. With favorable wheat prices, the outlook for next year's crop looks promising. Plan to attend a Pre-Plant wheat School that will be held on August 10 at the Lane County Fairgrounds in Dighton. The program starts at 9 a.m., and a sponsored lunch will be available at noon. There is no cost to attend the meeting, but please RSVP (call 866-755-1654) by August 7 so enough food can be ordered.

Brian Olson, K-State crops specialist NW area, will discuss which varieties have the potential for high production and other variety considerations, production practices, and factors important with no-till wheat and Hessian fly concerns. Dale Leikam, nutrient management specialist, will provide information on soil fertility for wheat production. Erick DeWolf, plant pathology specialist, will talk about wheat diseases that are important in wheat production and what practices should be addressed to control these diseases. Dan O'Brien, NW area ag economist, will discuss various risk management decisions. Mark Baus, Rush County producer and Howard Cartmill, crop production advisor, will also be on the program.

This school is sponsored by the Walnut Creek Extension District and the following grain elevators: Garden City Co-op, Bondurant Grain, Ness City Farm and Feed, Midland Marketing and Mid State Co-op.

K-State Research and Extension is committed to making its services, activities, and programs accessible to all participants. If you have special requirements due to a physical, vision or hearing disability, please contact David Coltrain at 800-460-9079.
