Wheat at a crossroads

Kansas

The expanded 2007 Kansas wheat Conference will be in Wichita on July 31 and August 1 at the Best Western Wichita North Hotel and Suites. This is the first time that the Kansas Association of wheat Growers and the Kansas wheat Commission, joining together as Kansas Wheat, have had their annual meetings in the summer following harvest.

Under the general theme of "Wheat At A Crossroads," Kansas wheat will be joining the Kansas Crop Improvement Association and the Kansas Seed Industry Association in an information-packed social event for Kansas wheat producers.

Producers may pre-register for the Conference for a $100 registration fee until July 20, then registration and at the door will be $110. Other possible fees would include $25 for a spouse for the July 31 evening dinner and entertainment, and $15 for a child 6 to 12 years of age for the dinner. Registration should be made with Kansas Wheat, 217 Southwind Place, Manhattan, KS 66503. The conference registration fee includes the July 31 evening dinner for the producer as well as the July 1 lunch.

The August 31 evening dinner and entertainment will be at the Prairie Rose Chuckwagon Supper east of Wichita beginning at 6 p.m.

It's down to business the next morning with the welcome by Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Adrian Polansky, followed by a panel discussion and review of the just completed harvest, including the performance of white wheat, and the final evaluations of the Easter freeze. An in-depth presentation on bio-technology and wheat will lead up to lunchtime.

The annual meeting of Kansas wheat will be held during the luncheon on August 1, followed by a view of the Kansas wheat industry in the eyes of a major competitor country; and then the latest information on using wheat for ethanol production, cattle feed and other industrial products will wrap up the 2007 Kansas wheat Conference.
