Hogan awarded Mary M. Hopkins Volunteer Service AwardKansas In appreciation of his time and dedication to the cattle industry, the Beef Empire Board of Directors named Bill Hogan as the 2007 Mary M. Hopkins Volunteer Service Award recipient. Hogan has given 60 years of service to the agricultural and cattle feeding industries. He has always been very active in the Beef Empire Days as well as the community. He also has been involved in several organizations and associations. He was a member of the Kansas Livestock Association, KLA Feeder Council and National Cattlemen's Beef Association. He has served as president 3 of his 9 years on the Beef Empire Days Board of Directors as well as served as a parade marshall. Hogan's love and passion for agriculture and people make him the ideal recipient for this award. He has been a part of every aspect of the beef industry. He is a fourth generation cattlemen who has fed cattle in Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska and Texas before coming to Kansas in 1991 to manage Hitch Feeders II. Mary M. Hopkins was the first Secretary-Treasurer of the organization upon incorporation in 1974. She became a life-time director of the Beef Empire Days, Inc. Board of Directors in 1991, after having served continuously since prior to incorporation. Her volunteer service to the Beef Empire Days organization was far reaching, as she was involved in each and every Beef Empire Days celebration from 1969 through 2002. In recognition of her life-time volunteer commitment the Beef Empire Days, Inc., the Board of Directors created an award in 2003 to recognize an outstanding community volunteer. Beef Empire Days sponsors have been given the opportunity to nominate outstanding volunteers and the Board of Directors selects the award winner from the nominations. Nomination guidelines were developed for the award, which include several areas of volunteer service: volunteerism in the community, a history of beef industry promotion of at least 10 years and involvement in a minimum of three different beef industry capacities. Beef industry capacities may include the Beef Empire Days, Inc. Board of Directors or volunteer committees, Southwest Kansas CattleWomen, Kansas CattleWomen, Kansas Livestock Association, breed associations or any other livestock industry related organization.
