Despite tornado, Kiowa County 4-H'ers off to camp

Kansas

With residents of Greensburg, Kan., focusing on recovery from an F5 tornado that leveled 95 percent of their town, many in the community also are re-defining "normal."

After the storm, Kiowa County Kansas State University Research and Extension agents--Pam Muntz and Carmen Stauth--questioned how they could best serve the community during its rebuilding process and still provide leadership for 4-H camp June 18-20.

Working more than full time to help others, the two agents also are coping with storm damage: Muntz lost her home and Stauth's husband's parents and grandparents lost their homes.

4-H members in Kiowa County, who typically join each year with Clark, Comanche and Meade county 4-H'ers to form a four-county camp group, need not have worried, said Rod Buchele. He is the 4-H youth development specialist based in the southwest area Extension office (in Garden City, Kan.) who volunteered to help coordinate this year's camp.

About 60 4-H campers, including nine from Kiowa County, are expected to attend the 2007 camp session, said Buchele, who is working with Clark County Extension agent, Taner Gillum, to provide leadership for the 4-H camp group.

With plans to try out a new lakeside campsite in Western Kansas this year already in place, Gillum said that normal camp activities--water and other sports, archery, line dancing, fishing, summer crafts, food, nutrition and health lessons and an opportunity to make new friends--will fill the days.

Our goal is to provide a safe, educational--and memorable--camp experience, said Buchele, who expressed thanks for extra help this year from members of the Kansas 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees who are picking up the tab for the Kiowa County 4-H campers.

More information on the 2007 Clark, Kiowa, Comanche and Meade counties' 4-H camp is available by contacting Buchele at 620-275-9164. More information on the Rock Springs 4-H Center or 4-H camps is available by calling the Kansas 4-H office at 785-532-5800.
