Van Vleck receives Pioneer Award from National Dairy Shrine

L. Dale Van Vleck, professor of animal science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and research geneticist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service, was selected to receive the Pioneer Award from the National Dairy Shrine.

The award will be presented during the World Dairy Expo Oct. 2 through the 6 in Madison, Wis.

The National Dairy Shrine recognizes several pioneers of the dairy industry each year.

National Dairy Shrine brings together dairy producers, scientists, students, educators, marketers and others who want to preserve the dairy heritage and keep the dairy industry strong.

Founded in 1949 by a small group of dairy leaders, National Dairy Shrine now has over 17,000 members encompassing virtually every facet of the industry.

Levis makes National Hog Farmer 2007 masters list

Don Levis, swine specialist and professor of animal science with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Northeast Research and Extension Center, was named Master of the Pork Industry by National Hog Farmer magazine.

The Masters of the Pork Industry are a special, handpicked group of pork industry visionaries.

Levis, who joined UNL in 1978, specializes in working with pork producers and extension educators in providing information on ways to improve reproductive efficiency in swine and to construct and manage swine breeding facilities.

Nebraska Forest Service Manager receives Silver Smokey Bear Award

Bob Vogltance, fire resources manager in the Nebraska Forest Service at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, received the Silver Smokey Bear Award.

The national award, given to a maximum of only five organizations or individuals annually, is sponsored by the National Association of State Foresters, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service and the Advertising Council. This year three awards were given.

The Silver Smokey Bear Award honors an organization or an individual who has provided outstanding regional (multi-state) service with significant program impact in wildland fire prevention over a period of at least two years.

Vogltance has been the fire resource manager since 1979. He has been instrumental in identifying and recruiting partners for the Nebraska Forest Service's Partners in Prevention Program and overseeing training and development in the area of wildfire prevention. He has taken the program from local fire departments in Nebraska to national and regional level fire prevention workshops.
