SD Stockgrowers Board of Directors approves brand contractSouth Dakota The South Dakota Stockgrowers Association Board of Directors voted June 28 to approve a brand inspection contract with the SD Brand Board. According to SDSGA President Rick Fox, Hermosa, SD, the contract will allow the Stockgrowers to continue providing the same top notch service to producers that they have for years. "There will be no change in employees or services provided. Producers, salebarn operators and the brand inspectors themselves have been in close contact with the Stockgrowers these past few months to voice their concerns about another entity--such as the state--taking over the program. I didn't hear from a single person who wanted state-run brand inspection, they are all very satisfied with the Stockgrowers' management of the program," said Fox. "Fortunately for the industry, we've been able to maintain that oversight of the brand inspection program with this new contract." Fox said that the major change to the contract will be ownership of the brand inspection fee account. The Brand Board will now own the account, with the Stockgrowers having the ability to write checks to pay program expenses, including an implementation fee that will be paid to the SDSGA monthly. "The Stockgrowers will pay all expenses out of the brand inspection fee account. The Brand Board will have the discretion to transfer money into a savings account if the funds in the brand inspection fee account become large enough to warrant doing so. The Stockgrowers believe that the funds should draw as much interest as possible in order to help fund the program." According to Fox, when there is a shortage of funds needed to pay expenses, the Brand Board will transfer the needed amount from their account that has accumulated over the years from unclaimed holds. "Because of the changes to the contract, we agreed that it should run for just one year. We know there will be a few bumps along the way as we work things out, but we intend to make sure that producers see no change in services. This is, after all, the producers' program and we hope to receive feedback from producers throughout the year to let us know if we are on the right track," said Fox. Date: 7/11/07
