Colorado wheat harvest increases

The Colorado winter wheat harvest was 18 percent harvested during the week ending on July 1, compared with 56 percent last year and the 5-year average of 25 percent. On June 29, U.S. Department of Agriculture increased its estimate of Colorado winter wheat acres planted from 2,250,000 to 2,450,000 and also increased its estimate of acres harvested from 2,100,000 to 2,250,000. This increase in acres harvested would increase Colorado winter wheat production from the June 1, estimate of 77,700,000 bushels to 83,250,000 bushels--the largest crop since 103,200,000 bushels were produced in 1999. USDA will issue a new crop estimate on July 12.

Baca county is approximately 45-50 percent harvested as of July 5. Yields in Baca county are averaging in the 45-50 bushel per acre range. Test weight in Baca county is averaging 60 pounds and protein is averaging in the 10-11 percent range. A producer in the Walsh area who has finished harvesting reported an average yield of 50 bushels per acre. A producer in the Springfield area who is 50 percent harvested reported yields ranging from 35-45 bushels per acre with an average yield so far of 40 bushels per acre.

Prowers county is 40-45 percent harvested as of July 5. Yields in Prowers county are averaging in the 50-55 bushel per acre range. Test weight in Prowers county is averaging 60 pounds and protein is averaging in the 10-11 percent range. A producer in the Lamar area who has just begun harvesting reported yields in the 35-70 bushels per acre, with an average yield mostly in the 40-50 bushel per acre range.

Kiowa county is 50-60 percent harvested as of today. Yields in Kiowa county are averaging in the 50-60 bushel per acre range. Test weight in Kiowa county is averaging 60 pounds and protein is averaging in the 10-11 percent range. Yields in the Brandon area are in the 25-75 bushel per acre range. A producer in the Brandon area who is two-thirds harvested reported an average yield of approximately 60 bushels per acre.

Cargill in Cheyenne Wells had received 1.2 million bushels as of the night of July 2. Harvest is only 30 percent complete in that area and yields are ranging from 30-80 bushels per acre. Test weight is averaging 60 pounds and protein is averaging in the range of 11.5-11.8 percent.

A producer in the Burlington area reported that he is 50 percent harvested and yields are ranging from 25-50 bushels per acre with an average yield in the 35-40 bushel per acre range.
