China embraces EFS SystemAs China continues to be a major buyer in the world cotton market, cotton incorporated has been strategically and aggressively marketing its proprietary cotton fiber management computer software, the Engineered Fiber Selection (EFS) System, to Chinese mills and manufacturers. Charles H. Chewning, Jr., cotton Incorporated's vice president, EFS Marketing-China, stated that nearly 70 leading mills around the world currently use the EFS System. Those marketing efforts, especially those in China, are now paying dividends for U.S. cotton. Three Chinese manufacturers and five China-based textile mills have signed EFS licenses. "These new EFS customers clearly see a significant advantage in managing their High Volume Instrument (HVI) cotton data with the EFS System because it leads to improved end products," said Chewning. In 2005, Hong Kong-based Central Textiles became a licensed EFS user. In 2006, after representatives of Lanyan Group Ltd. attended cotton Incorporated's EFS Systems Conference in Shanghai, they signed an EFS license for one of their three mills, and now have the EFS advantage in all three of their facilities. The EFS System helps lower costs and improve the quality of the product, which in turn help improve the position of those in the highly competitive marketplace. The most recent EFS installation was by Jiaxing Denim, in February. These three companies annually consume 850,000 bales of cotton. As textile operations in the West look East for a competitive advantage, cotton Incorporated is providing that advantage while directly increasing Chinese demand for U.S. cotton. "U.S. producers need to remember that for any mill across the glove to become an EFS licensee, they must commit to using an increased amount of U.S. cotton, above what they are currently using," said Chewning.
