West Plains regional salesThe Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 1,650 head Jan. 23, compared to 1,056 head last week and 2,963 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo. Compared to last week, steers under 650 pounds were $3 to $5 higher, over 650 pounds were weak to mostly $2 lower. Heifers under 500 pounds were $2 to $4 higher, 500 to 600 pounds at best steady, over 600 pounds steady to $2 lower. The supply was light, with a high percentage of weaned calves in the market, especially heavier calves weighing 600 to 750 pounds. Demand was uneven, moderate to good on steers under 600 and heifers under 500 pounds, light to moderate on heavier weights. Strongest demand continues for higher quality, lighter weight weaned calves in a "quick start" start condition, with all their shots. Besides the uncertainties of corn/cattle future prices, weather related conditions continues to play havoc with current demand in several areas, which was re-blanketed from this last winter storm. The feeder supply consisted of 54% steers and 46% heifers, with nearly 32% over 600 pounds.
