UNL to host half-day biofuels and water resources retreat

Nebraska

Opportunities and challenges related to Nebraska's booming ethanol industry will be examined in a morning retreat at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Jan. 19.

The retreat will be in the first floor auditorium of Hardin Hall, North 33rd and Holdrege streets, UNL East Campus. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. and the retreat concludes at 12:15 p.m.

Though designed primarily as a chance for UNL researchers and their staffs to explore possible research partnerships and funding opportunities in the rapidly expanding biofuels industry, the public is invited to attend any or all of the retreat's sessions, said UNL Water Center director Kyle Hoagland.

Eight presentations will cover such topics as Nebraska's challenges in supplying water for biofuels development by Jim Cook, Nebraska Department of Natural Resources; water quality challenges with expanded ethanol production through the use of distillers grains, by livestock bioenvironmental engineer Rick Koelsch; and improved irrigation technology options when corn production and prices are high by UNL agricultural economist Ray Supalla and water resources engineer Suat Irmak.

Discussion of opportunities for faculty collaboration on new initiatives of the biofuels water and energy connection will be led by Hoagland and Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research director Ken Cassman.

Registration is online only at http://wrri.unl.edu and registration deadline is noon Jan. 16.

UNL's Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research, Water Center, Water Resources Research Initiative and Department of Biological Systems Engineering are presenting the retreat.
