Third annual Heart of Oklahoma Cattle Conference slatedOklahoma Producers who are interested in knowing the latest information and technology available for improving beef production should plan on attending the Heart of Oklahoma Cattle Conference March 24 at the Exposition Center in Shawnee. "Ag producers have been experiencing one of the worst drought periods in modern history and resources have been difficult to stretch over this period," said Joe Benton, Pottawatomie County Extension educator. "This year's conference is designed to bring Oklahoma farmers and ranchers the latest information and technology with 'Principles of 21st Century Beef Production.'" Early registration is $7 by March 14 and $10 the day of the conference; this will cover the cost of lunch and handout materials. "If you don't make the deadline, that is fine; just call in so they will have a head count for the meal," Benton said. Registration forms are available through all Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Service County offices, usually listed under "County Government" in local telephone directories. The morning sessions will cover the topics of plant nutrition and fertilization; the effects of fertility management on forage stocking rates; weed and brush--timing, new products, hard to control species and using goats; and profiting from fertilizing and controlling weeds. "This year weed control may be worth everything in an operation," Benton said. "Lack of competition in grass stands has allowed many weeds to flourish. For every pound of weeds controlled, a poundage of grass can be released for use." The conference will look at the latest and best products and how to use them in a cost effective manner on pasture weeds and brush. The afternoon session will focus on hay quality, grazing solutions and heard health practices for the 21st century. "Proper grazing strategies are a must in grass stand health and maximum forage usage," he said. Benton said a live demonstration along with discussion on current beef health issues will be a highlight of the conference. Worming, castration, dehorning, implanting and other beef production health and management concerns will be shown and discussed, with a goal of a healthier, better managed calf capable of bringing top dollar the next market day. "In addition to the sessions, there will be a trade show with several exhibits," Benton said. He said there is limited booth space available for the trade show, but interested vendors can contact him for details. The Heart of Oklahoma Cattle Conference is sponsored by the OSU Cooperative Extension Service and Pottawatomie County Cattle Producer's Association.
