Texas woman elected to Simmental board

Texas

Beth Mercer, Monte Alto, Texas, has been elected to a three-year term on the 16-member Board of Trustees of the American Simmental Association.

Along with her husband, Joe, Mercer owns Filegonia Cattle Company, which features a Simbrah-based herd. Their cowherd consists of 150 head of purebred and bred-up Simbrah females. Mercer began using Simbrah bulls in 1992, using a base of Red Brangus females. Currently, Filegonia is using a SimAngus bull on some of their Simbrah cows to produce commercial replacement heifers. Filegonia's genetics are marketed throughout the world, with a focus on the Southern U.S., Mexico, Central and South America and South Africa.

A graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio, Mercer went on to earn a master's degree in architecture from Texas A&M. She has also been an active member and leader of numerous beef organizations, including the Texas Simmental/Simbrah Association, the Rio Grande Valley Beef Improvement Association, the American Breeds Coalition, as well as others. Presently, Mercer resides as the vice president of Mercer & Ussery, Inc., a construction company specializing in construction of municipal water and wastewater facilities.

Mercer was formally seated at ASA's 39th annual meeting held Jan. 13 in Denver. Also seated re-elected incumbents, Curtis Russell, Sugar City, Colo.; Mike Stoltey, Plummer, Idaho; and Bob Volk, Arlington, Neb.

The American Simmental Association is headquartered in Bozeman, Montana, and maintains the breed registries for the Simmental and Simbrah breeds of cattle. ASA has an active adult and junior membership of nearly 8,000.
