St. Onge livestock auction report

The St. Onge Livestock Sales Co., Ltd., St. Onge, S.D., reported receipts of 3,540 head, compared to 1,808 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Sioux Falls, S.D.

This was the first sale of 2007, therefore trends were not applicable. Cattle suitable for grass sold with a firm undertone. Cattle suitable for background-feed yard sold with a weak undertone. Slaughter cows and bulls sold with a firm undertone. A full house with a mixture of both buyers and sellers. Bred cow and heifer markets were fairly active with quality mostly attractive. Demand was moderate to good on all classes of livestock. Feeder receipts included 52% steers and 48% heifers, with 41% over 600 pounds. Receipts were about 64% feeder, 24% bred cows and heifers, 8% slaughter cows and bulls, with balance feeding cows returning to the country plus other miscellaneous cattle.

Feeder steers: Medium and large frame 1, 5 head, 214 lbs., 136.00; 6 head, 338 lbs., 132.00; 454 to 488 lbs., 119.00 to 130.00 (124.04); 514 to 516 lbs., 116.00 to 120.50 (119.33); 553 to 595 lbs., 104.50 to 110.00 (107.61); 551 to 568 lbs., 114.00 to 117.50 (116.19) value added; 11 head, 612 lbs., 107.50; 618 to 648 lbs., 94.50 to 103.00 (100.48) calves; 650 to 677 lbs., 93.25 to 98.00 (95.20) calves; 701 to 727 lbs., 91.75 to 98.85 (96.55) calves; 30 head, 769 lbs., 92.25; 11 head, 756 lbs., 90.50 calves; 15 head, 826 lbs., 88.25 calves. Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 8 head, 449 lbs., 116.00; 11 head, 470 to 488 lbs., 109.00 to 113.50 (111.00); 505 to 527 lbs., 109.00 to 110.00 (109.49); 580 to 589 lbs., 101.00 to 101.50 (101.39); 78 head, 602 lbs., 100.50; 652 to 679 lbs., 90.00 to 94.00 (92.22) calves. Large frame 1, 25 head, 833 lbs., 87.75 calves. Medium frame 1 to 2, 6 head, 448 lbs., 106.00; 6 head, 518 lbs., 105.00.

Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 15 head, 396 lbs., 113.00; 479 to 497 lbs., 94.00 to 103.50 (102.01); 554 to 591 lbs., 91.00 to 95.50 (93.29); 606 to 642 lbs., 86.50 to 90.50 (88.74) calves; 6 head, 662 lbs., 83.75. Replacement females: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 2 years old, 770 to 940 lbs., 81.00 to 90.00; heiferettes 815 to 1100 lbs., 68.50 to 79.00. Feeder cows, Medium and large frame 1 to 2, Young 825 to 1120 lbs., few 61.00 to 61.50; Middle aged 1070 to 1260 lbs., 52.50 to 58.00; Aged 1045 to 1130 lbs., few 48.00 to 49.00.

Slaughter cows: Breakers, 75 to 80% lean, 1140 to 1700 lbs., 49.50 to 52.50; low dressing, 48.50. Boners, 80 to 85% lean, 1050 to 1800 lbs., 47.50 to 50.50; high dressing, 51.00 to 55.00; low dressing, 46.50 to 47.00. Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 1000 to 1320 lbs., 44.00 to 47.00; high dressing, 48.00 to 51.50; low dressing, 41.00 to 43.50; 85 to 90% lean, 895 lbs., 35.50.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 1615 to 2970 lbs., 60.00 to 61.50; high dressing, 62.75 to 65.25; low dressing, 51.50 to 58.50.

Bred heifers: Medium and large frame 1, bred black, calve February to May, price per head, 7 head, 1260 lbs., red 1210.00; 454 head, 940 to 1230 lbs., black-black whiteface-red 920.00 to 1080.00; 45 head, 880 to 1300 lbs., black 835.00 to 885.00. Medium and large frame 1 to 2, bred black, calve March to April, price per head, 14 head, 975 to 1060 lbs., red whiteface 900.00 to 930.00.

Bred cows: Medium and large frame 1, bred black, calve February to May, price per head, 126 head, 3 to 5 years old, 1105 to 1400 lbs., black-black whiteface-red 950.00 to 1135.00; 23 head, solid short solid, 1240 to 1625 lbs., black-red 740.00 to 800.00; 41 head, broken, 1170 to 1400 lbs., black-black whiteface 665.00 to 735.00; 12 head, broken, 1600 lbs., red-red whiteface 780.00; 6 head, broken, 1165 lbs., black 535.00 thin.
