Richardson continues push for agricultural relief after stormSANTA FE (AP)--Gov. Bill Richardson has directly asked U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns to approve New Mexico's application for disaster assistance following a winter storm that wrecked havoc on the state just before the new year. With a federal disaster declaration, ranchers in New Mexico would be eligible for low cost loans to restore property, pay part of production costs and refinance certain debts. "This disaster assistance will help ranchers get back on their feet and recover from this record storm," Richardson said Jan. 16 after speaking with Johanns. "I expressed to Secretary Johanns that ranchers in northeastern New Mexico sustained extensive damage following the New Year's blizzard and I requested quick approval of our disaster assistance request." After the storm, Richardson directed the New Mexico National Guard to use helicopters to help with relief efforts in northeastern New Mexico. The Guard checked on residents stranded in their homes and dropped bales of hay to livestock in remote areas. The Guard conducted missions for five days, helping dozens of ranches in eight counties and providing food to thousands of head of cattle. B 3 1/29/07 5 Star OK Date: 1/25/07
