Newell sheep sales report

St. Onge Livestock Co., Ltd., Newell Sheep Yards, Newell, S.D., reported receipts of 3,070 head Jan. 18, compared to 260 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Sioux Falls, S.D.

This was the first sale of 2007, therefore trends are not applicable. Demand was good on all classes with most activity of feeder lambs. Receipts included about 68% feeders, 20% slaughter ewes, 8% replacement ewes, with the balance slaughter lambs, slaughter bucks and miscellaneous sheep and goats.

Slaughter lambs: Wooled Choice and Prime 2 to 3, 19 head, 139 to 142 lbs., 83.00 to 83.50 (83.23).

Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, 48 head, 180 lbs., 41.50. Good 3 to 4, 180 to 191 lbs., 40.25 to 40.50 (40.35). Utility 1 to 2, 44 head, 163 lbs., 40.00. Cull and Utility 1 to 2, 64 head, 141 lbs., 37.00; 15 head, 223 lbs., 35.75. Cull 1, 11 head, 128 lbs., 18.00.

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 23 head, 58 lbs., 121.00; 49 head, 68 lbs., 119.50; 70 to 75 lbs., 116.75 to 119.00 (117.70); 83 to 87 lbs., 115.00 to 117.75 (116.15); 103 to 104 lbs., 104.75; 15 head, 100 lbs., 95.00 black face; 109 lbs., 99.50 fleshy; 44 head, 114 lbs., 92.50. Medium and large frame 2, 63 head, 85 lbs., 105.00; 39 head, 96 lbs., 104.75. Small and medium frame 1 to 2, 64 head, 56 lbs., 112.00; 70 head, 77 lbs., 104.50.

Replacement ewes: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, white face, bred white-black face, price per head, 19 head, 1 to 3 years old, 180 lbs., lamb April 1, 102.50 fleshy; 97 head, 2 to 5 years old, 161 lbs., lamb March 7, 85.00 to 86.00; 97 head, 6 years old, 156 lbs., lamb March 7, 42.75 cwt; 38 head, short term, 161 to 178 lbs., lamb April 1, 40.00 to 40.25 cwt.

Aged bucks: 64 head, 238 to 266 lbs., 26.75 to 28.50 medium to fleshy.
