NCBA President Mike John, SDCA president speak at Ag ExpoSouth Dakota National Cattlemen's Beef Association President, Mike John traveled to South Dakota recently to join the president of the South Dakota Cattlemen's Association in addressing local producers at the Ag Expo in Mobridge. John and Jones addressed several important industry issues, including animal ID, environmental and regulatory issues, marketing issues and the importance of international trade policy based on sound science. "Although many cattlemen are concerned about the 2007 farm bill, the proposed rules for cattle and beef imports from Canada, and country-of-origin labeling, I believe we should allow the market and free enterprise to address these issues while we work to ensure the activist community doesn't continue to threaten our livelihood," said John. John emphasized that animal welfare and environmental activists are a much greater threat to cattlemen than the marketing and trade issues that challenge the industry, citing the proposed ban on horse slaughter and EPA's recent move to regulate dust as examples of the potential harm activists can cause the cattle and beef industry. "I believe addressing the activists should be a top priority and represents the biggest challenge for producers because we are so few in number. I encourage producers to contact their representatives, senators, and local and state lawmakers and work with state and national organizations to advance the interests of the industry," said John. Scott Jones, SDCA president, also addressed producers in attendance. Jones gave an overview about SDCA structure and how SDCA works on the state, local, and national levels. Jones also discussed the need for property tax reform, animal ID programs that work for producers, and the monitoring of environmental and property rights issues important to South Dakota producers. "I feel these are the top priorities for local producers. Legislative session has just begun and it is important for SDCA to work proactively with our state leaders on issues that will directly impact cattle producers," said Jones. South Dakota Cattlemen's Association is working to advance the interests of South Dakota's Cattlemen through the representation and promotion of the beef industry.
