West Plains regional sales

The Ozarks Regional Stockyards, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 4,678 head Feb. 20, compared to 1,495 head last week, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, steers and heifers under 600 pounds were $3 to $6 higher, with several 350- to 500-pound steers and most 450- to 600-pound heifers $5.00 to $10 higher when the market reached full throttle. Steers over 600 pounds were firm to $3 higher, although a few early mostly fleshy were no better than steady. Heifers over 600 pounds sold steady to mostly $2 lower. The supply was moderate. Demand very good on weights under 600 pounds, moderate to good on heavier cattle. Good buyer attendance. Buyers rekindled the flame under the light and middle weights, as the market heated up for those weaned and more suitable for grass and even some just because they were burnin' up with quality. But the fact remains, most buyers are pretty gutsy, as currently lots of fat cattle reportedly losing $130 to $140 per head, some more and some less. The feeder supply consisted of 52% steers and 48% heifers, with nearly 36% over 600 pounds.
