Reproduction pioneer named Limousin promoterThe North American Limousin Foundation presented its Limousin Promoter of the Year award during the National Western Stock Show Limousin pen and carload shows, Jan. 10 in Denver. The promoter award goes to someone in allied industry who has advanced the Limousin breed through marketing, education or research. For a lifetime of devoted work toward helping commercial producers increase their profitability, Don LeFever, Fort Collins, Colo., received this year's commemorative mantel clock from Kent Andersen, Ph.D., NALF executive vice president. LeFever, a former research associate in the Colorado State University Department of Animal Sciences, invented the reproductive-tract scoring system for evaluating heifer puberty. Starting in 1990, he conducted research with NALF at Running Creek Ranch, Elizabeth, and at CSU into heifer pregnancy, reproductive-tract scores, pelvic measures, muscle and adaptability scores. That study contributed Limousin data for at least two masters' theses and numerous research projects. He also researched the use of pelvic measurements to help cattle producers manage calving ease in first-calf heifers. LeFever has measured scrotal circumferences on Limousin and Lim-Flex bulls at the NWSS for more than 10 years. He is a past president of the Colorado Cattlemen's Association and will be the tour chairman for the upcoming Beef Improvement Federation convention in Fort Collins. The North American Limousin Foundation (www.nalf.org), headquartered in Englewood, Colo., provides programs and services--including genetic evaluation of 5,000 active sires--to nearly 4,000 members and their commercial customers.
