Runner-up Champion Weitzel was sponsored by Brush Livestock, Brush, Colo. Shoemaker won $500 from the host market. All three titlists won championship belt buckles. For the first time in the 44-year history of the WLAC, LMA held regional qualifying contests. The eight top scorers in each regional contest move on to the June event. Twenty-four contestants qualified last fall at contests in Wytheville, Va., Madras, Ore., and Sulphur Springs, Texas. The master of ceremonies for the four regional contests was current world champion, David Macedo, Tulare, Calif. Each of the 28 contestants at Ogallala sold several drafts of cattle. Three judges, all market owners/operators, scored each contestant on vocal clarity/quality, bid-catching ability, the ability to keep the sale moving, and by asking the question, "Would I hire this auctioneer for my business?" The three winners at the June WLAC will be awarded thousands of dollars in cash and merchandise prizes, along with custom-fit hats provided by the Resistol Hat Co., America's largest western hat maker. LMA originated and conducts the annual WLAC to spotlight the importance of competitive marketing to the livestock economy, and to salute the auctioneers who continue to be a vital part of that process. 0 1/5/99 None Date: 2/16/07
