NCGA- TPA renewal vital to continued ag opportunities
The National corn Growers Association continues to highlight the need for renewing Trade Promotion Authority in order for the U.S. to remain competitive in the global marketplace, said NCGA President Ken McCauley. "Good trade agreements provide U.S. corn producers and our value-added products new markets, which stimulates the economies of rural communities. Good trade agreements are only possible with TPA," said McCauley. TPA gives the president the ability to negotiate trade agreement with other countries by requiring a straight up or down vote on an agreement in Congress. It also requires consultation with Congress during the negotiation process. The current TPA legislation expires June 30. U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Susan Schwab testified before the House Ways and Means Committee this week about the importance of renewing TPA. Renewal is necessary, she said, for the administration's aggressive trade agenda, including a successful conclusion to the Doha round negotiations. Members of the House Ways and Means Committee have suggested that they are interested in renewing TPA, but would require some concessions be made by the administration. "U.S. negotiators are working toward a conclusion of the Doha negotiations that will give U.S. agriculture more ambitious market access," said McCauley. "TPA ensures that the administration has the necessary tools to negotiate good trade agreements for U.S. agriculture." 1 Star WK 2/26/07 9 B Date: 2/22/07
