Panhandle researcher earns national recognitionTexas Dr. William Payne, a Texas Agricultural Experiment Station researcher, has been named as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Payne, a crop physiologist at the Texas A&M University System Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Amarillo, will be presented with the award on Feb. 17 at the association's annual meeting in San Francisco. Payne is one of the honorees in the Agriculture, Food and Renewable Resources section. Each recipient will receive a certificate and a blue and gold rosette as a symbol of distinguished accomplishments, according to association information. Payne, who also serves as adjunct professor at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, has been a researcher in Amarillo since 2000. His program focuses on optimization of water use in diverse cropping systems through improved physiological adaptation of the plants to such environmental stresses as drought, temperature extremes, and poor soil fertility. In addition, Payne said his work concentrates on the identification of new species, improved cultivars, and crop management technologies suited to local environmental conditions. His international experience includes 10 years in semi-arid West Africa, and he has studied abiotic stress tolerance in many crops, including sorghum, wheat, pearl millet, cowpeas, corn and peanuts. Payne earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry at Wabash College, Ind., and his master's and doctorate degrees in soil science at Texas A&M University. He recently was recognized as a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy. He also is active in the Soil Science Society of America and Crop Science Society of America. ------CUTLINE------ Dr. Bill Payne will be named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
