Wyobraska cattle sales report

The combined sales volume for Wyoming, western Nebraska and western North and South Dakota auctions for the week ending Dec. 22, totaled 5,150 head, compared to 4,100 head last week and 1,275 head last year, according to the USDA-Wyoming Department of Agriculture Market News, Torrington, Wyo.

Compared to last week at Wyoming auctions, steer calves sold steady to $3 lower, heifer calves were steady to $2 lower, instances sold $3 to $5 lower in Riverton, yearlings were not well tested. Demand was moderate to good. Overall quality not nearly as attractive as past weeks. Direct trading was very slow this week. There were not enough comparable sales for a market trend. Demand was moderate. Buyer inquiry was moderate. Offerings were light to moderate with yearling cattle in short supply. Unless otherwise noted direct prices are current FOB with a 2 to 3% shrink or equivalent and with a 5 to 10 cent from base weight. Steers made up approximately 56% of the supply, heifers 44%, with 50% over 600 pounds. Direct sales accounted for 1175 head of the total receipts.

Steers: Auctions, Medium and large frame 1, 300 to 310 lbs., 153.50 to 156.00; 380 to 400 lbs., 144.00 to 150.00; 400 to 450 lbs., 131.00 to 145.00; 450 to 500 lbs., 124.00 to 130.00; 500 to 550 lbs., 116.00 to 130.00, value added 500 to 510 lbs., 132.00 to 133.50; 550 to 600 lbs., 109.00 to 121.50; calves 600 to 650 lbs., 107.00 to 114.50; calves 650 to 700 lbs., 99.50 to 106.75; 700 to 800 lbs., 94.00 to 103.25; 820 to 885 lbs., 98.00 to 99.00; 920 lbs., 93.00. Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 360 lbs., 134.00; 450 to 500 lbs., 114.00 to 120.00; 500 to 600 lbs., 95.00 to 117.00; 600 lbs., 105.00. Medium frame 1, 395 lbs., 128.00; 495 lbs., 116.00. Large frame 2, 740 lbs., 36.00.

Feeder bulls: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 610 lbs., 98.50. Direct, Medium and large frame 1, FOB price, 700 to 775 lbs., 105.00 to 108.00; 850 lbs., 99.00.
