Texas corn producers meet with other southern state corn groupsLUBBOCK, Texas--Texas Corn Producers Board met with four other state corn organizations on Dec. 18 in Birmingham, Ala., to discuss common production issues. The leadership of TCPB, Alabama Soybean and Corn Association, Mississippi Corn Growers Association, Corn Growers Association of North Carolina and Georgia Corn Growers Association hoped the meeting would provide a better link between the states as they deal with new issues prompted by increased corn acreage. TCPB Executive Director, David Gibson, said the meeting provided a good opportunity for the state corn groups to collaborate. "Although the increased acreage of corn is certainly a good thing for our states, it has brought up some new problems for many producers, and a few of the old problems have gotten bigger," Gibson said. "This meeting allowed for the southern corn producing states to work jointly on solutions for these important issues." Aflatoxin, general corn research, crop insurance, farm bill status and current projects being funded by each state were among the items discussed at the meeting. TCPB member and past National Corn Growers Association president, Dee Vaughan, facilitated the meeting. "We realize the corn producing states in the South all have similar issues that differ from the states in the Corn Belt, such as aflatoxin, farm bill issues and production problems," Vaughn said. "The rapid increase in corn acreage has really compounded these issues, so we wanted to move together to resolve these issues. With every problem an opportunity is created, and we want to help our producers benefit from those opportunities." Vaughn said the group of organizations agreed to continue communications, and established a committee to review key research within each state so it is not duplicated. The southern state corn groups will formally meet again at Commodity Classic in Nashville, Tenn., Feb. 26-March 1. TCPB chairman, Joe Reed of Kress, Texas and TCPB director Scott Averhoff of Waxahachie, Texas also represented Texas corn producers at the meeting. TCPB is supported by a state voluntary half-cent per bushel checkoff. These funds are used for research, promotion, education and marketing and are allocated by a 15-member producer board. Each project that is funded is aimed at improving production and quality in every Texas corn producing area.
