Stockgrowers hold quarterly meetingSouth Dakota Ranchers from all across the state attended the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association November Quarterly Meeting in Winner, said SDSGA District 14 Director, Jim Murphy, Reliance. "Winner was a great location for our meeting. I really appreciated several local members who helped organize the event," said Murphy. "I was also glad to see the chairman and executive director of the South Dakota Brand Board participate in the meeting." SDSGA Vice President Kenny Fox, Belvidere, enjoyed the meeting and the chance to hear R-CALF USA Vice President Randy Stevenson, Wheatland, Wyo., speak about the farm bill and the Over Thirty Month Rule. "Randy told the crowd that over one hundred thousand dollars have been raised, just recently, to help with R-CALF's legal suit to stop the OTM rule from being implemented," said Fox. "Randy is very well-informed regarding this and other cattle industry issues. He also spoke about the farm bill and clarified the need for the competition title." "As a rancher, I feel fortunate that Randy and his wife, Charlie, are so involved in the industry. R-CALF is in good hands, with Randy on the leadership team," said Fox. According to SDSGA President Larry Nelson, Buffalo, another highlight of the meeting was a presentation by the Winner FFA Chapter about their trip to the national convention. "They really gave a good talk and their enthusiasm for agriculture gives one hope that there still is a future for young people interested in production agriculture." Larry added that he enjoyed the Ag and Natural Resources Committee meeting where Committee Chairman Linda Gilbert, Buffalo, reported on a water rights convention she had attended recently, in Salt Lake City. "We all know how important water rights are, for those of us making a living off the land; the Stockgrowers are beginning to delve deeper into this subject in order to provide our members with the most practical information we can," said Nelson. "We appreciate Linda taking the initiative to attend the meeting and return to South Dakota with useful information for all of us." 12/31/07 Date: 12/26/07
