St. Onge livestock sales
The St. Onge Livestock Sales Co., Ltd., St. Onge, S.D., reported receipts of 639 head Dec. 21, compared to 1,347 head last week and 2,011 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, S.D. Compared to last week, feeder cattle and calves not well tested. Feeding cows sold $1 to $3 lower in a limited test. Slaughter cows and bulls sold steady to $2 lower. Demand was moderate at best with limited buyers attendance due to the weather. Winter weather paid a visit to the Northern Black Hills, with freezing temperatures and blowing snow that effected most road conditions and put a damper on livestock movement. This also lightened receipts for the last sale of 2007. The feeder supply was comprised of 0% steers, 65% feeder bulls and 35% heifers with 77% over 600 pounds. Receipts included about 16% feeder cattle, 58% feeding cows, 10% bred cattle, 13% slaughter cows and bulls with the balance other miscellaneous cattle. This was the last sale for 2007. Sales will resume on Friday January 4, 2008. Feeder heifers: Medium an large frame 1, 5 head, 407 lbs., 110.00; 6 head, 879 lbs., 96.50; 5 head, 910 lbs., 94.25. Medium frame 1 to 2, 8 head, 515 to 539 lbs., 100.00 to 101.00 (100.36). Small and medium frame 2 to 3, 9 head, 368 lbs., 61.00. Feeder bulls: Medium an large frame 1, 12 head, 650 lbs., 95.00 calves; 42 head, 718 lbs., 96.00 calves; 7 head, 821 lbs., 80.50. Feeding cows: Medium an large frame 1 to 2, heiferettes, 850 to 1130 lbs., 75.00 to 88.00; 3 to 4 years old, 825 to 1050 lbs., 65.00 to 73.00; young, 875 to 1300 lbs., 50.50 to 61.00; middle-aged, 1000 to 1275 lbs., 42.00 to 48.00; few aged, 1100 to 1350 lbs 37.00 to 37.50. Large frame 1, few 1400 to 1515 lbs 44.00 to 45.00. Slaughter cows: Breakers, 75 to 80% lean, 1350 to 1750 lbs., 43.50 to 45.50. Boners, 80 to 85% lean, 1050 to 1675 lbs., 38.00 to 41.50; high dressing, 45.00 to 45.75 (37.50). Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 1000 to 1250 lbs., 35.00 to 38.50; low dressing, 33.25 to 34.75; 900 to 975 lbs., 35.00 to 35.50. Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 1650 to 2350 lbs., 52.00 to 53.25; low dressing, 47.25 to 51.50. Bred cows: Medium an large frame 1 to 2, bred black, calve March to April, price per head, 5 head, 1228 lbs., 3 to 5 years old, black-black whiteface 885.00; 58 head, 1085 to 1165 lbs., broken, black-black whiteface 510.00 to 610.00.
