MSGA convention a huge success

Montana

Montana's number one industry--agriculture--brought together over 500 producers for meetings, presentations, policy making, educational seminars, entertainment, and networking at the Montana Stockgrowers 123rd Annual Convention on Dec. 14 and 15 in Billings.

The event kicked off on Friday morning with reports from association leadership along with a dynamic address from Secretary of State, Brad Johnson. The morning concluded with an officer and issue forum with questions from the audience for each of the panelists regarding current issues the industry is facing. Each of the Montana Stockgrowers Association's standing committees then met to determine policy and hear speakers in their respective areas.

During lunch, a live broadcast of the Northern Ag Network added energy to an already packed schedule including the announcement of the Veseth Cattle Company as the 2007 Environmental Stewardship Award winners. Montana Senators Max Baucus and John Tester, along with Congressman Dennis Rehberg sent messages for the crowd as well.

Friday evening concluded with the grand opening of the MSGA trade show. Nearly 100 vendors were on hand to greet convention attendees as the trade show opened with a fiesta flare! From cattle health products to jewelry, vendors answered questions about their products while agencies and associations explained their services.

The Inspirational Breakfast commenced Saturday morning with memorials recognizing loved ones and friends who have passed away this year. The CattleWomen presented their scholarship and the Steer of Merit awards were presented as well. An inspiring speech from Dr. Joseph Apostol on heart health rounded out the morning's breakfast.

Spirit of Women, a special event centered on the ladies attending convention, was a huge hit. MSGA partnered with Holy Rosary Healthcare, St. Vincent Healthcare and the Montana Beef Council for this exciting three-hour event focused on healthy living. Events included yoga lessons, mini-massage breaks, and a cooking lesson from celebrity Chef Devin Alexander from the Discovery Channel and TV show, "The Biggest Loser."

During this year's President's Lunch, MSGA recognized outgoing board of directors; Gene Curry, Eric Moore and Tom Lowry for their years of service. Montana Beef Council Executive Director, Charlene Rich, gave a checkoff update and NCBA President, John Queen, offered a lively address to the crowd.

The Pfizer Cattlemen's College was, as always, well received with the producers in attendance. Sessions were offered on BVD-PI, low stress cattle handling, international beef trade issues, and alternative feeds.

At the MSGA Business Meeting, members voted on policy ranging from brucellosis to the beef checkoff. New directors elected to the MSGA board were South Central district representative Jason Camp of Belgrade, Southeast district representative Don Griffin of Ismay, and North Central district representative Kraig Meeks of Geraldine.

The Grand Finale Banquet was packed with many memorable moments. As true tradition merits, the event was full of prizes and give-aways that were handed out to members. Kraig Meeks was awarded the MSGA Top Hand 2007 Top Recruiter award for signing up the most new members. Larry Switzer, from Richey, was the lucky winner of the Dodge truck lease and Marilyn Fuller won the lawnmower, which was given to a Spirit of Women attendee. Kim Rowland won Adeles Party Smart, the colt donated by North County Quarter Horses. Carol Mosher was the lucky recipient of the one-week resort time share donated to the Montana Agricultural Political Action (MaPa) Fund which was donated by Gene and Cheryl Curry. The lively Cattle Directory Auction brought in over $61,000 and the Spirit of Women Fashion Show was a big hit. The Outstanding Ranching Woman award went to longtime MSGA member Holly Smith from Dillon, Mont. To close the evening, MSGA attorney and lobbyist, John Bloomquist took the stage to recognize many years of loyal service that Karla Johnson contributed to MSGA. The event ended with dancing and entertainment by Shane Clouse and Stomping Ground.

"We'd like to continue to build on the huge success of convention and the excitement that was generated to prepare for the coming year," said MSGA President, Steve Roth. "MSGA's leadership and staff now have a clear plan to follow as we help lead the industry in 2008."

Thanks to all of the sponsors who made convention possible. Everyone had a great time and the hospitality of Billings was much appreciated.
