Howell to serve on Kansas Beef CouncilKansas Dr. Brittany Howell, associate professor of agriculture, is the first Fort Hays State University faculty member to be named to the Kansas Beef Council. Howell, who was nominated by leaders in the Kansas beef industry, will serve at least until 2010. The KBC's primary function is to promote beef, using checkoff dollars collected from the sale of beef cattle. "This board is typically operated by leaders in the beef industry," said Howell, "so to be asked to serve with others so highly respected is a high honor." Some of the goals of the council are to improve producer profit and increase the public demand for beef. Howell said she is excited because this allows her to play a major role in the industry that she loves and loves to teach. The council meets three times a year. Promotional efforts include producing nutritional information for consumers; sponsoring health-oriented activities cooking and providing beef samples for customers and retailers; and educating chefs on beef preparation and new cuts of beef. The council also researches cuts of beef to get more value per animal and researches recipes and preparation methods of interest to the consumer. Date: 12/27/07
