Coming to a mailbox at the end of your drivewayIt seems as though someone always wants information from you. Are you the owner of your home? Do you need new windows and siding? Do you need another credit card? How about telling me how many acres you farm? Whether it is a telemarketing call or a special offer "just for you," they all want to know something about you and your business. However, there is one very important survey that is coming to a mailbox at the end of your driveway. It is the 2007 Census of Agriculture. Farmers and ranchers should be receiving it in the next few days. Completed forms are due Feb. 4. The most common question producers have is, why do I need to fill this thing out? What difference does it make, anyway? The Census of Agriculture has more influence than you might think. It is an unbiased survey of farmers and ranchers that helps all of your supporting industries make decisions. Trends and needs can be identified. By doing so, those allied industries, as well as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, can better serve you. Businesses, including the Journal, evaluate the census to decide whether we are on target with the services we provide to you, or whether we need to make adjustments. The next question most producers ask is, does USDA keep my information confidential? The answers are protected by law. They only publish complied data and the reports cannot be used for purposes of taxation, investigation or regulation. For your convenience, you can also go online and complete the survey--www.agcensus.usda.gov. You will need the number off of your mailing label in order to log on. Keep your eyes open for the survey and take the time to complete it. It is in our industry's best interest.
