Catch-it calves distributedColorado Four County 4-H members recently began their 2007-2008 Catch-It-Calf project activities. This is the thirty ninth consecutive year that this Extension youth program has been in operation. More than 230 participants have fed and marketed a steer through this program in Morgan County. The Catch-It-Calf program is an educational beef feeding program in which the contestant who catches a calf at the Morgan County Fair in August is presented their calf to begin the market beef project. The Shorthorn calves were purchased from Gary and Laura Teague. They will be fed out and exhibited at next year's Morgan County Fair. Upon completion of the project, the youth will receive 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of their calf. The Catch-It-Calf contest consists of five categories: record keeping, sponsor relations, interview judging, industry target market weight and show ring placing. The champion Catch-It-Calf participant will be determined by achieving the highest score based on these five categories. Sponsors of the program contribute 50% of the cost of the steers. The sponsors for this year's program are as follows: Ted and Joan Pearson, Fort Morgan; John Woodward, Snyder; Morgan County Cattlemen's Association; Roger Miller Memorial, Fort Morgan; Premier Farm Credit, Fort Morgan; Keith Bath Feedlots, Fort Morgan; Morgan County Farmers Union; Bill and Betty Baker, Fort Morgan. This year's Catch-It-Calf participants are Katie Kitzman,Wiggins; Jake Lockhart, Weldona; Mitch O'Patick, Wiggins; and Austin Risner, Wiggins. The calves will be exhibited at the 2008 Morgan County Fair in August. The committee members that assist the Extension Livestock Agent with this program are Windy Collier, Wiggins; Rockie Ernst, Wiggins; and Larry Vickers Jr., Fort Morgan. Date: 12/26/07
