St. Onge livestock auction

The St. Onge Livestock Sales Co., Ltd., St. Onge, S.D., reported receipts of 1,347 head Dec. 14, compared to 2,569 head last week and 1,672 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Compared to last week, steer calves sold steady to $3 lower, except 500- to 550-pound offerings sold steady to $2 higher. Heifer calves under 500 pounds sold $2 to $4 higher, and offerings over 500 pounds sold mostly steady. Feeding cows sold mostly steady to firm. Slaughter cows and bulls sold mostly steady to firm. Demand was moderate to good. The feeder supply was comprised of 58% steers and 42% heifers with 34% over 600 pounds. Receipts included about 52% feeders, 40% feeding cows, 5% slaughter cows and bulls with the balance other miscellaneous cattle.

Feeder steers: Medium and large frame 1, 427 to 448 lbs., 126.00 to 127.00 (126.13); 506 to 538 lbs., 115.00 to 119.75 (119.26); 550 to 575 lbs., 113.00 to 116.50 (114.85); 608 to 647 lbs., 101.50 to 108.50 (107.45) calves; 653 to 685 lbs., 96.75 to 102.50 (99.68) calves; 15 head, 776 lbs., 97.75. Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 5 head, 441 lbs., 114.00; 12 head, 466 to 499 lbs., 112.00 to 116.00 (114.61); 573 to 583 lbs., 105.50 to 107.00 (106.09). Medium and large frame 2, 7 head, 491 lbs., 106.00.

Feeder heifers: Medium and large frame 1, 450 to 487 lbs., 111.50 to 117.00 (113.83); 518 to 527 lbs., 109.00 to 114.50 (112.89); 551 to 594 lbs., 101.00 to 105.50 (104.47); 650 to 697 lbs., 94.00 to 96.50 (96.16) calves; 21 head, 845 lbs., 100.00; 5 head, 801 lbs., 95.50 calves. Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 12 head, 539 to 548 lbs., 95.00 to 104.00 (99.54).

Feeding cows: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, heiferettes, 875 to 1100 lbs., 79.50 to 85.00; 3 to 4 years old, 975 to 1200 lbs., 68.50 to 74.00; young, 1100 to 1200 lbs., 53.00 to 65.00; middle aged, 1050 to 1350 lbs., 46.00 to 50.50; aged, 1050 to 1300 lbs., 41.00 to 44.50. Large frame 1, 1385 to 1575 lbs., 46.00 to 49.50.

Slaughter cows: Boners, 80 to 85% lean, 1000 to 1400 lbs., 41.00 to 42.50; low dressing, 37.50 to 39.50. Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 1000 to 1250 lbs., 37.50 to 40.25; low dressing, 31.50 to 35.50.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 1550 to 2345 lbs., 53.50 to 55.00; low dressing, 51.50 to 52.75.
