SDSG hopeful for farm bill

South Dakota

South Dakota Stockgrowers Association is still hopeful for a new farm bill despite attempts to derail it in the Senate prior to the Thanksgiving recess.

The Senate Agriculture Committee passed the 2007 farm bill unanimously, with bipartisan support, and debate began on Nov. 5 in the full Senate. However, as partisan disputes arose over types and amount of amendments, no decisions were made and a vote for cloture was called for.

Passage of the cloture vote would have stopped debate and moved the farm bill forward, however it failed in a 55 to 42 vote.

Stockgrower President Larry Nelson, Buffalo, S.D. said, "We are proud of the stand that our South Dakota senators took." Both Tim Johnson (D) and John Thune (R) voted in favor or cloture. He went on to say "An extra 'thank you' goes out to Senator Thune for taking a stand against his own Republican party for the good of South Dakotans."

Senator Thune was one of only four republicans to vote in favor of stopping the debate.

As the Senate reconvenes following the Thanksgiving recess, the South Dakota Stockgrowers remain hopeful that the 2007 farm bill will come to fruition. Many organizations have worked extremely hard this past year to have included in this farm bill, a Livestock Title that is vitally important to the livelihood of livestock producers everywhere.
