Nebraska Soybean Day and Machinery Expo offers '08 growing seasNebraska The 2007 Nebraska Soybean Day and Machinery Expo Dec. 14 will assist soybean producers in planning for next year's growing season. Topics will address production to storage to marketing. The expo, which begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 2:30 p.m., will be in the pavilion at the Saunders County Fairgrounds in Wahoo, said Keith Glewen, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension educator. The expo opens with coffee, doughnuts and the opportunity to view equipment and exhibitor booths. Speakers start at 9 a.m. John Gnadke, harvest management consultant of AGS Inc. of Ankeny, Iowa, will present "Most Common Mistakes Made in Storing Grain." He also will discuss new bin considerations. Gnadke's presentations are sponsored by Pioneer Hi-Bred International. Gnadke's career and expertise span 42 years of working with grain drying, storage and harvest management. And he has co-authored a manual titled, "Quality Grain Care, A Grower's Quick Reference Guide." Palle Pedersen, soybean Extension agronomist at Iowa State University, will present "Ten Most Common Yield Limiting Factors In Soybean Production." Pedersen coordinates and provides state leadership in soybean production and management in Iowa. His work in extension and research focuses on economical and environmentally sustainable soybean production systems to maximize yield. Emphasis is on soybean response to management systems and new technologies, genetic and management system interactions, crop rotation effects and the effect of agronomic practices on soybean pathogens and pests. Glewen will discuss on-farm soybean production research results from area growers. The Nebraska Soybean Board and Soybean Association will give a Checkoff update and association information, while Mike Steenhoek, director, National Soybean Transportation Coalition will present, "A Bump in the Road: How Transportation is a Growing Obstacle to Soybean Profitability." Roy Smith, well-known educator, broadcaster, writer and founder of Soyroy Inc., will present his perspective on "Making Sense Out the Grain Markets." Other presenters include UNL researchers and specialists, Nebraska Soybean Board representatives, soybean growers and private industry representatives. Producers will be able to visit with representatives from seed, herbicide, fertilizer and equipment companies and view new farm equipment during a 30-minute break at 10 a.m. Soy doughnuts will be cooked on site and the Pancake Man will serve a complimentary lunch.
