Jingle what?By Seymour Klierly At a recent Democrat Christmas party . . . I mean holiday party . . . after several cups of eggnog, party members from both houses were overheard complaining how difficult it is being in the majority. It's clear that Democrats are struggling to pass their legislative initiatives. At the beginning of the year they vowed to pass all the appropriations bills on their own. In the end, they resorted to combining 11 of the 12 bills into one mega-bill. Furthermore, throughout the year they have been defeated on 60 plus Iraq war votes, energy bills, health care, tax policy and nearly everything else. Republican obstructionism has proven to be a bit more challenging than they expected. In an effort to relieve some of their frustrations, a few members were rumored to have quietly sung a new version of a popular Christmas carol. Through my extensive network of contacts and sources hidden deep in the shadows of Washington, I was able to secure a copy of the lyrics to their year end theme, set to the tune of "Jingle Bells." Dashing through the halls In a pinstriped buttoned suit. Trying to pass a bill, No earmarks to boot. Cell phones always ring Blackberries won't stop, Lobbyists keep calling me, We've got no time to shop! Oh - Passing bills, passing bills Is harder than it looks. Oh what fun it was when we Did not control the books! Oh - Passing bills, passing bills We're in a time crunch. I wish that the lobbyists Could still take me out to lunch! A year or two ago We wanted to take over. Now that we're in control, We can't handle the power. The floor is hard to lead, Members often object. When we think we've got the votes, It all blows up to heck! Oh - Senators, Congressmen Why don't you vote our way? We need to appease our base With Iraq votes all darn day!" Oh - Senators, Congressmen Why don't you vote our way? If we don't pass more bills Their money may go away!" Next week I'll be sipping on a little eggnog myself and won't have a column, but I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Date: 12/19/07
