Inwood farmer named 2007 Joslin Young Leader

Iowa

Mike Ver Steeg of Inwood has received the 2007 Bob Joslin Excellence in Ag award at the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation annual meeting in Des Moines Dec. 8. The award honors young farmers who demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities in Farm Bureau, agriculture and their community.

Ver Steeg, and his wife, Sarah, own and operate a sow, farrow-to-wean operation and raise corn and soybeans. He sells the weaned pigs to his dad, Eugene, who finishes the hogs to market weight.

He has been involved with Farm Bureau since 1995, serving in various county positions including president, vice president and voting delegate of the Lyon County Farm Bureau. He received the IFBF Young Farmer Achievement Award and was the American Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmer Achievement Award runner-up. He has also taken part in the AFBF Partners in Agricultural Leadership program. Currently, the Ver Steegs serve on the AFBF Young Farmer and Rancher Committee.

Outside of Farm Bureau, Ver Steeg is active in his church and various civic and agricultural organizations. He and Sarah have three children.

Ver Steeg received a $750 Growmark FS gift certificate for his honor. The award is given in memory of Bob Joslin, who served as IFBF president from January 1986 to December 1987 and was known for his support and encouragement of young farmers.
