Wyobraska cattle sales report
The combined sales volume of Wyoming, western Nebraska and western North and South Dakota auctions for the week ending Dec. 1, totaled 8,100 head, compared to 3,725 head last week and 3,275 head last year, according to the USDA-Wyoming Department of Agriculture Market News, Torrington, Wyo. Compared to last week at Wyoming auctions, steer calves under 650 pounds sold steady to $5 higher, heifers under 600 pounds were steady to $6 higher, instances were $7 to $10 higher at Torrington. Yearlings had no good price comparison, however a higher undertone was noted. Demand was good with several long strings of preconditioned weaned calves. Overall quality very good to fancy. Direct trading was slow. There were not enough comparable sales for a market trend. Demand was moderate. Buyer inquiry was moderate. Offerings were light to moderate with yearling cattle in short supply. Unless otherwise noted direct prices are current FOB with a 2 to 3% shrink or equivalent and with a 5 to 10 cent from base weight. Steers made up approximately 45% of the supply, heifers 55%. Offerings over 600 pounds totaled around 20%. Direct sales accounted for 60 head of the total receipts.
