Spradling elected to lead OFB

Oklahoma

Mike Spradling, a Sand Springs rancher and pecan producer, was selected by voting delegates at the annual Oklahoma Farm Bureau Convention Nov. 10 to serve a two-year term as president.

Spradling, elected to the Farm Bureau Board of Directors in 1999, has served the farm organization in numerous capacities at the county and state levels for more than 30 years.

"I want to keep Farm Bureau headed in a positive direction, representing the state's farm families," Spradling said. "In addition, I want to look at a three to five year strategic plan, focusing on the future."

Voting delegates also passed a bushel basket of resolutions to guide the organization in 2008. Key resolutions include:

--Support for disaster assistance in the federal farm program.

--The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry should develop a voluntary eradication program for Persistently Infected Bovine Viral Diarrhea.

--Reaffirmed the Board of Regents at OSU to include farmers and ranchers actually engaged in agriculture as their principal occupation.

--Promote improved rural communications infrastructure including access to high speed Internet service.

--Encourage the American Farm Bureau Federation to develop a vigorous television educational campaign aimed at school-aged children.

During the awards ceremony, Farm Bureau named Jody and Paula Sloan, Vian, as the Farm Family of the Year; Scott Dvorak, Perry, received the Distinguished Service to Farm Bureau Award and Joe Mayer, Guymon, received the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award.

The Young Farmers and Ranchers awards included Achievement Award winners Tim and Sheila Taylor, Stillwater; Excellence in Agriculture winner, Joseph Tripp, Lamont and Discussion Meet Contest winner Ryan Luter, Morrison.
