Bull test kicks off 34th year

By Bruce Fickenscher

CSU Extension Agent, Test Coordinator

Colorado

The 34th Annual Southeast Colorado Bull Test was officially started Nov. 27. Thirty-four bulls from seven cooperators were weighed and entered. Breeds represented include Brangus, Salers, Braunvieh, Angus, and Polled Hereford.

The 105 day test will conclude on March 11, 2008 with the last weigh day. Bulls will undergo a Breeding Soundness Exam, be Ultra-sound measured, and presented for sale on April 8, 2008 at Winter Livestock in La Junta, Colo., at noon. All bulls entered in the test have been certified negative BVD persistently infected.

Averages for the bulls at the start of the feeding period this year include 267 days of age, 723 pound average weight, and have gained 2.40 pounds per day of age. The performance testing program is conducted with the cooperation of Trail City Livestock, the Southeast Colorado Bull Test Association and Colorado State University Cooperative Extension. Coordinator for the test is Bruce Fickenscher, CSU Extension agent in Eads, and the staff of the Kiowa County Extension office.

The bulls are fed a moderate energy/high roughage growing ration that is designed to develop the bulls for breeding use as yearlings. This ration allows the bulls to express their genetic potential for feedlot traits, but is not designed for maximum gain.

With the three week adjustment period completed and the initial weights recorded, the bulls will be weighted at the 37 day (Jan. 3), 70 day (Feb. 5), and 105 day (March 11) intervals in the feeding period. Reports will be published and available at those times. Data sheets maybe obtained by contacting the Kiowa County Extension office at 719-438-5321 or online at http://kiowacounty.colostate.edu.
